Words of Our Time cast brass medal 2012 by Ron Dutton RD223.  95mm. cast by Madeley Foundry.

Made to voice the artist’s own concerns about the society in which we live.  “Where there’s muck there’s brass.  This medal has resulted from my reflections on the current social climate and is intended as a gift for individuals who, through their writing, creative work and decision-making, have made a special contribution to my understanding of the changes taking place in society today…

The medal in style is a reinterpretation of the rib-vaulted architecture of Buildwas Abbey, a Cistercian monastery of the 12th century on the banks of the Severn, Shropshire.  On the obverse symbols are common symbols of wealth GREEN GRIEF GREED SHOOTS with bags of money and a pound sign, £, superimposed. On the reverse what may be lost in the pursuit of wealth BONUS CUTS HACK RIOT, a monk with a book and tendrils.  The monks “by their skills and labours… confirmed their dedication to achieving worthwhile ends”
