GB bronze medal Royal Philharmonic Orchestra 50th Anniversary Tour 1996 by Ron Dutton. Edward Elgar, composer, portrait RD208
reverse: Various musical instruments, mainly wind and brass, fanned out in celebration.
84mm cast bronze
A speculative medal – not listed in Dutton’s exhibitions. Â The RPO was founded by Sir Thomas Beecham – Dutton had already made a medal for the centenary of Beecham in 1979 (commissioned by Peter Seaby, B A Seaby Ltd.) Â The choice of Edward Elgar (1857-1934) for the medal is therefore curious unless his work was part of the anniversary tour programme.
