Egypt: Opening of Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel built under Suez Canal by OSMAC 1976-1980 Cast bronze art medal commission by Ron Dutton- RD178 Â 77mm.
Dutton uses landscape to express the vigour of this engineering feat: Â the Suez Canal shown as a cut into the troubled earth while the tunnel is a broad single sweep. Â All this under a burning sun with palm trees.
Reverse text: Â AHMED HAMDI TUNNEL built under the SUEZ CANAL by OSMAC 1976-1980 Â (Tarmac Construction). Â The text is divided by concentric waves, Â imitating boring into the earth to make the tunnel.
Originally a ‘shield tunnel’ at Shallufa, now a mile long road highway with a lane in either direction. Â First tunnel to join Suez in Africa and to the Sinai Peninsula in Asia.
