GB/France Gilt bronze medal Equestrian statue of Marshal Haig 1931 inaugurated Montreuil sur Mer 28 June. Haig (1861-1928) commanded the British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front from late 1915 until the end of the war. Sometimes known as ‘Butcher Haig’ because of the 2 million casualties which occurred under his command (Somme, Passchendaele). Montreuil was Haig’s headquarters during WW1, The statue is by Paul Landowski. Melted down by the Germans in WW2 the statue was recast in 1950 by the Rudier foundry.
