Sir Winston Churchill 1874-1965 facing portrait bust, shown with his books and paintbrushes on shelf behind him. Reverse image is a tribute to Churchill’s wartime leadership as Prime Minister. It is adapted from the famous cartoon by Sir David Low after the retreat from Dunkirk in 1940: it epitomises the wartime spirit of the British as a soldier shakes his fist in defiance at the incoming enemy warcraft, the seas rage and the cry is “Very Well, Alone”.
