GB Royal Society London Rumford Medal by Charles Wiener for physics, namely important discoveries in the field of thermal or optical properties of matter and their applications, base metal 77mm. The award began in 1796 is named for its founder Sir Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford, He is best known for his work on thermodynamics and for establishing the Royal Institution. The medal should be in either gold or silver; however this medal doesn’t ring silver. It may be pewter and possibly for a display or an archive copy. US connection as Count Rumford (1753-1814) was an American born British military officer who supported the Loyalist cause in the American War of Independence. Educated at Harvard. Died in Paris
