Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral Crypt service 31 Oct 1937 – depicts Lutyens’s original design – bronze medal

by Fattorini of Birmingham (Roman Catholic makers)

pierced for wearing

31.9mm.

We have not had this medal before.  This is an unusual depiction of the original Lutyens design.  The crypt  was finished in 1937 but the main building work stopped for lack of funds.  Then WW2 interrupted things further.  After the war there was a rethink.  Lutyens having died a new cheaper design was built.  The architect was Sir Frederick Ernest Gibberd CBE RA (7 January 1908 – 9 January 1984).  The ‘Mersey Funnel’  was finally consecrated in 1967.
