According to the Greenwich Museums website: Humane Society for the Hundred of Salford was founded in 1789 and revived after a lapse in 1824. Its objectives were: ‘to reward persons who have shown courage and self-devotion on occasions when life has been endangered by water, fire or other cause’ in the Greater Manchester area. The Society awarded medals in gold, silver and bronze up to 1922. Most of its records were lost in the Manchester blitz
