The Saint-Martin canal is a 4.55 km long canal located mainly in the 10th and 11th arrondissements of Paris. It connects the Villette basin — and beyond the Ourcq canal — to the Arsenal port (the Paris marina) which communicates with the Seine. It is a small canal originally intended for the supply of drinking water to the capital. Inaugurated in 1825, it has nine locks and two swing bridges for a total drop of 25 m. With the Ourcq canal, the Villette basin and the Saint-Denis canal, it constitutes the network of Parisian canals, 130 km long, which belongs to the City of Paris. The Saint-Martin canal has been a listed historic monument since February 23, 1993.
