GB: Early 18th century coin weight or bullion weight. Brass incuse to weigh silver halfcrown – D XXX both sides
D XXX is an indication of the value of the silver being weighed. In this case 30 pence = 2 shillings and 6 pence
23.5mm. 14.98g
This style of weight was first used in the early 1600’s. However this example is carefully adjusted and probably dates from after the 1690’s as a result of the recoinage of 1696. There were a lot of new coins as well as a lot of counterfeits so coin weights became a necessary tool for merchants and consumers.
