Newcastle Industrial Exhibition medal pewter 1840 – depicts Newcastle Cathedral tower
white metal 41.5mm
BHM 1982
Up until 1832 Newcastle did not have a cathedral as it was part o the diocese of Durham. Because of the increase of population of Newcastle the Durham diocese was divided so the old parish church of Newcastle became a cathedral in 1832 . The choice of the newly consecrated cathedral is a clear indication of local civic pride.
