Winning Bid: £450.00

Item condition: Used

Netherlands, Onderdrukking en Verzet (Oppression and Resistance) by Ludwig Oswald Wenckebach (1895-1962, sculptor and printmaker). Six struck bronze medals 85mm. all with the same reverse – a Dutch lion having broken its chains holding a sword aloft and a bundle of fasces in the other paw, the Nazi swastika in pieces beneath. The six medals represent those who were in concentration camps, imprisoned, executed by firing squad, died as soldiers in May 1940, oppressed during the occupation but steadfast throughout. The medal with the prisoner in his cell is a self portrait, with Wenckebach’s cell number on the jar next to him. The text is taken from the Dutch national anthem, Wilhelmus. The dies were struck during World War II by the Rijks Munt Royal Mint in Utrecht but only issued in 1945. Wenckebach is well known for designing war memorials and the Dutch coinage used between 1948-1980. Lot of 6 pieces – unusual to find a complete set.  All bronze 85mm. condition overall gEF
