Winning Bid: £290.00

Item condition: Used

Netherlands/Hungary, Ice Bear IV cast bronze patinated by Elisabeth Varga c. 1993-4. Polar bear walking left on an ice floe.  On the reverse of the medal it seems as if the bear disappears into the darkness of the bronze with just two holes left in the metal.  One of an edition of 10 only. Elisabeth Varga 1948-2011. The polar bear or ijsbeerknuffel belonged to her father who fled Hungary in 1923 as a four year old child through the Red Cross, and found refuge in the Netherlands. The medal refers not only to global warming and the precarious future for the bear, but also to the traumatised childhood of her father. The other three iterations of ‘On Top of the Circle’ or Ice Bear were made in alabaster as unique items (see FIDEM XXVI 1998 Modern Art Medals A Retrospective pp197 no.56. An example is in the British Museum collection) Only the bronze was editioned. 66mm. approximately, cast bronze and blue patina. As made, a poignant and expressive work of art.
