EF Update: This medal was designed by Elijah Albert Cox (1876-1955) who is better known for his work producing posters for the London Underground and was made by the Birmingham Medal Co. It was made to help raise funds for the Wolverhampton and Staffordshire General Hospital and to commemorate a visit to it by the Prince of Wales. This information comes in a letter from the Appeal Director A.F Shepherd that appeared in the Smethwick Telephone newspaper on 16 June 1923. Although the medal to which he is referring is not illustrated or described it can only be this one. The figurative work is typical of Cox.
