The Royal Albert Orphan Asylum, Bagshot, Surrey was established in 1864 to provide board, clothing and lodging and Christian Education to orphaned children between the ages of 6-12. The boys were taught trades and industrial occupations while the girls were trained to become ‘useful and industrious servants’. The medals were awarded to long serving staff members, at least 17 years in service, and in Shaw’s case 33 years.
